MAIL
CONTRACTORS OF AMERICA
HISTORY
In 1945, several
Little Rock business people formed Inter City Transit Company,
the forerunner to Mail Contractors of America, Inc. (“MCA”).
That Company was primarily a passenger bus service, with the
main routes serving the military bases in Jacksonville and
Fort Smith, Arkansas. The runs were feeder routes for national
carriers such as Greyhound and Trailways.
In 1946, Little
Rock banker Andy Burbridge, purchased a controlling interest
in Inter City, and began to diversify into the highway post
office system. Specially designed buses were used to transport
mail between post offices. Each bus was operated by a driver
and a mail clerk, with the mail clerk “strapped” in the back
of the bus sorting mail.
Burbridge foresaw
that with the creation of the federal interstate highway system,
the highway post buses would give way to a more efficient
method of mail distribution. The tractor-trailer rig became
the foremost method of mail transport. As new postal routes
became available, Inter City began using these rigs to increase
its scope. Burbridge created new companies to operate the
various routes, but the corporate management remained in Little
Rock, Arkansas under his direction. He directed the steady
expansion of the companies until his death in 1985, at which
time the combined interests of the MCA included over 20 postal
contracts nation-wide.
In 1986, the family
decided to consolidate some of the various companies, rather
than sell them. Randy Mourot was hired as general manager
to oversee the merger. On January 1, 1987, Mail Contractors
of Arkansas, Inc., opened its doors as the streamlined product
of the merger of the five original Inter City companies.
In April of 1989,
Mourot purchased the companies with a commitment to uphold
the established reputation for excellence. The first acquisition
closed in 1990 with a company called B & F Transportation.
At the end of 1991,
MCA was incorporated and acquired a group of companies in
early 1992 with routes in the Northeast part of the country.
The Company continued to grow through acquisitions in the
upper Midwest and northeast parts of the country.
Today, MCA operates
137 USPS contracts and services railroads and logistic service
providers in nearly a dozen cities nationwide. MCA manages
terminals throughout the country, operates in nearly all the
48 contiguious states, and maintains its headquarters in Little
Rock, Arkansas. The Company’s fleet includes over 900 tractors
and 1,400 trailers, and the combined business operates over
104,000,000 miles annually. MCA’s team of professionals includes
over 2,000 dedicated drivers, mechanics, managers, and administrative
staff.
MCA’s strategy
is to apply the dedicated service expertise and infrastructure
utilized in the mail-hauling industry and apply these skills
and assets to dedicated service opportunities in the transportation
market place. MCA will also continue to expand its presence
in the intermodal transportation market place.
In spite of its
tremendous growth, the Company remains dedicated to the principles
established by its founder. The Company’s mission is to provide
outstanding service to its customers while continuing to grow
in the increasingly competitive transportation environment
and provide good quality of life to its employees and their
families.
